Therapy for Older Adults and Older Couples

It is never too late to understand yourself better or to change how you and your partner talk to each other. Crystal works with adults 65 and older and with couples who have been together for decades.

Later Life Brings Its Own Changes

Retirement, health changes, the loss of a spouse or friends, moving closer to family or away from a long-time home. Later life can bring a great deal of change at once, and it can be lonely to carry it without someone to talk to.

Some people have waited many years to try therapy. Others are coming back to it. Either way, you are welcome to start where you are.

For Couples Who Have Been Together a Long Time

Crystal works with couples who have been married for decades and still find themselves in the same arguments. Long marriages carry deep history, and sometimes that history turns into sharp words and old scorekeeping. Couples sessions help slow those moments down so both people can be heard.

Couples work may draw from the Gottman method and emotionally focused therapy. It goes best when both partners are willing to make change happen.

What Older Adults Often Bring

  • Grief and loss, including the loss of a spouse
  • Adjusting to retirement or a new routine
  • Loneliness and changes in family relationships
  • Anxiety or low mood alongside health changes
  • Long-standing conflict in a marriage

Getting Comfortable With Video Sessions

If video calls are new to you, that is common and easy to work through. You need a phone, tablet or computer with a camera, a steady internet connection and a private spot. A family member can help set it up the first time, then step out of the room so the session stays yours.

Telehealth can also be a relief when driving is harder, when the summer heat makes leaving the house less appealing, or when a spouse needs care at home.

Rates

  • Individual intake $250, then $200 per session
  • Couple intake $300, then $250 per session
  • Free consultation of about 15 minutes
  • Out-of-network superbills are provided on request

How to Begin

A free consultation of about 15 minutes comes first. Then an intake session, where the goals for treatment are set. After that, sessions are usually weekly for the first 6 to 8 weeks, then every 2, 3 or 4 weeks, and never less than once a month.

Sessions are held by secure telehealth. If you have not used video calls much, the consultation is a relaxed way to get comfortable with it first.
