Why Do My Emotions Feel Bigger Than Other People's?

If your feelings come on fast, hit hard and take a long time to settle, you are not too much. Some people are simply wired to feel more, and there are skills that help.

Questions People Ask

What Emotional Intensity Can Look Like

  • Going from calm to overwhelmed in seconds
  • Feeling hurt or rejected by small changes in tone
  • Strong fear of being left or abandoned
  • Relationships that swing between very close and very painful
  • Regretting what you said or did once the feeling passes

Why It Happens

Emotional sensitivity is partly how you are wired from birth. It is also shaped by what happened around you, especially if your feelings were dismissed, punished or ignored growing up. When a sensitive person never gets to learn how to handle big feelings, those feelings can start to run the show. That is not a character flaw. It is a skills gap, and skills can be learned.

What Helps

DBT was built for exactly this. Its skills cover getting through the peak of an emotion, lowering intensity over time and asking for what you need in relationships. Parts work, or IFS, adds a gentle way to understand the part of you that reacts so strongly. Crystal's work with intense emotions and borderline personality may draw from both.

You Are Welcome Here

If you have felt judged or labeled in the past, you do not have to minimize that here. The work is collaborative and moves at your pace.

What a Hard Moment Can Look Like

A friend cancels plans at the last minute. For some people that is a small disappointment. For someone who feels emotions intensely, it can land as rejection, bring up old memories of being left, and turn into hours of hurt or anger. None of that means the person is overreacting on purpose. Their system is simply reacting at full volume.

Skills can turn the volume down enough to choose a response, like naming the feeling, waiting before replying and asking for what you need.

Starting Therapy for Intense Emotions

Sessions are held by secure telehealth for people located in Arizona or Oregon, beginning with a free consultation of about 15 minutes and an intake where goals are set. Sessions are usually weekly for the first 6 to 8 weeks, which gives new skills time to take root before sessions spread out.
