DBT Skills for Intense Emotions

Dialectical behavior therapy, or DBT, was built for people whose emotions come on fast and strong. Its skills help you ride out painful moments without making them worse.

How Crystal Works

DBT in Plain Language

The word dialectical means holding two things at once. In DBT the central pair is acceptance and change: you are doing the best you can, and you can also learn new ways to cope. That balance matters, because people with intense emotions have often been told only to change, and that rarely helps.

DBT is organized around a set of skills you can practice and use in real life.

The Four Skill Areas

  • Mindfulness: noticing what is happening in you right now without judging it
  • Distress tolerance: getting through a crisis moment without acting in ways you regret
  • Emotion regulation: understanding your emotions and lowering their intensity over time
  • Interpersonal effectiveness: asking for what you need and keeping relationships and self-respect intact

Who DBT Skills Can Help

DBT is closely linked with borderline personality, and Crystal's work in that area may draw from DBT and IFS. The skills are also useful for anyone who feels their emotions are bigger than other people's, who swings between extremes in relationships, or who finds it hard to calm down once upset.

How Crystal Uses DBT

Crystal's training includes DBT. Sessions may draw from DBT skills in individual therapy and with teens, always at your pace and without judgment. Crystal does not apply one method to everyone. Sessions may draw from this approach when it fits your goals, alongside others in her training.

A Skill You Can Try Today

One well-known DBT idea for moments when emotions spike is to change your body's state quickly: cool water on your face, a few minutes of brisk movement, or slow breathing with a longer exhale. These do not solve the problem, but they can lower the intensity enough to think before you act.

In sessions, skills like this are practiced and adjusted to fit your life, so they are ready when you need them most.

Why the Skills Feel Practical

DBT skills are concrete and easy to remember, which is part of why they work well for teens and adults alike. Sessions may focus on the situations where emotions run highest for you, such as conflict at home, pressure at school or work, or moments of feeling left out, and on which skill fits each one.
