Coaching and Therapy: How to Tell Which You Need

Crystal Boyd is a licensed professional counselor who also offers life coaching. The two are kept clearly apart, and this page explains how they differ so you can choose with confidence.

Coaching and Therapy

Therapy Is Mental Health Care

Therapy is clinical care from a licensed professional. It starts with an intake, where Crystal makes sure she understands what you are coming for and sets goals for treatment, and it can address anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, intense emotions, relationship patterns and more. Therapy is offered to people located in Arizona or Oregon, where Crystal is licensed.

Coaching Is Guidance for Moving Forward

Life Improvement coaching is one-on-one support across 6 to 12 sessions for adults and teens who want to refocus themselves and their lives. It is practical and forward-looking. Coaching is not therapy and is not a substitute for mental health care. It does not diagnose or treat any condition.

A Simple Way to Decide

  • Symptoms are getting in the way of daily life, sleep, work or relationships: therapy
  • You are dealing with trauma, grief, depression or intense emotions: therapy
  • You feel basically steady and want structure and accountability for a change: coaching
  • You are not sure: book the free consultation and talk it through

Why the Line Matters

Keeping coaching and therapy separate protects you. It means you always know what kind of help you are receiving, and that if something needs clinical care it gets clinical care. During the free consultation Crystal asks who you are and what you want help with, so the two of you can choose the right path from the start.

What Each Looks Like in Practice

In therapy, the first full session is an intake that sets goals for treatment, and sessions usually start weekly for the first 6 to 8 weeks. The work can go into history, patterns and symptoms when that is what helps.

In Life Improvement coaching, sessions focus on where you want to go and what is getting in the way right now. It runs across 6 to 12 one-on-one sessions for adults and teens, with structure and accountability built in.

When the Need Changes

Sometimes a person starts out wanting guidance, and it becomes clear that what they are carrying needs clinical care. Keeping the two clearly apart makes that easy to recognize and talk about openly. Starting with the free consultation helps you choose the right path from the beginning, and you can ask about anything that is not listed on the site.
