How Crystal Works

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Acceptance and commitment therapy, or ACT, helps you stop fighting the thoughts and feelings you cannot control, and put your energy into living by what matters to you.

How Crystal Works

ACT in Plain Language

A lot of suffering comes from the struggle against discomfort: trying not to feel anxious, trying to push a memory away, waiting to feel ready before doing anything. ACT suggests a different move. Make room for the feeling, notice the thought as a thought, and take a step toward the life you want anyway.

It is not about giving up or pretending things are fine. It is about getting unstuck.

The Core Ideas

  • Acceptance: allowing feelings to be there without a fight
  • Defusion: seeing thoughts as words passing through, not orders
  • Being present: coming back to what is happening now
  • Values: getting clear on what you care about
  • Committed action: small, real steps in that direction

Where ACT Fits

ACT is helpful for anxiety, depression, stress and burnout, life transitions and patterns that do not respond to simply thinking differently. It fits naturally with Crystal's mission: helping people find methods that help them become the person they want to be.

How Crystal Uses ACT

ACT is among the approaches in Crystal's training, and sessions may draw from it alongside CBT and mindfulness-based work. Crystal does not apply one method to everyone. Sessions may draw from this approach when it fits your goals, alongside others in her training.

An Everyday Example

Imagine you want to speak up in meetings, but every time you try, your heart races and the thought "you will sound foolish" gets loud. ACT does not wait for the fear to disappear. It helps you notice the thought, make room for the racing heart, remember why speaking up matters to you, and say one sentence anyway.

Over time the fear can matter less, because it is no longer the thing deciding what you do.

Values Are a Compass, Not a Grade

Values in ACT are the qualities you want to bring to your life, like kindness, courage or honesty. They are not goals you finish and check off. You can move toward them on a hard day as well as a good one, which makes them especially useful when life does not go to plan.

Getting Started

ACT works well by secure telehealth, because much of the practice happens in ordinary moments at home and at work. Sessions start with a free consultation of about 15 minutes, then an intake where goals are set. Individual sessions are $200.
